Single mother of four buys used car; owner tells her to look in the trunk when she gets home – Story of the Day

A single mother of four decided to buy a used car to commute to work. The vehicle’s previous owner asked her to open the trunk when she got home. What she found in the trunk would change her life.

Jennifer was a single mother of four young children. Her husband, Adam, left her when he discovered she was pregnant with their fourth child.

“Another child to feed? No way! I’ve had enough!” she said one day. Then she left her trailer and filed for divorce.

Jennifer was devastated. She and Adam hadn’t planned the pregnancy, but the mother thought she’d have his support during such a difficult time, especially since they were already facing financial difficulties.

After their separation, the man stopped giving her money for their children. He told her he didn’t have a job and that no one would hire him because he hadn’t graduated from college.

Shortly after giving birth, Jennifer had no choice but to look for work, as she was running out of money for food, diapers, and milk.

The mother walked through strips of restaurants and stores, only to be turned down by the owners because she had four young children.

“It’s hard to hire mothers with young children because something always comes up. Either your child is sick or you don’t have anyone to leave them with, so you have to miss work. I’m sorry, it’s too much to deal with,” one employer told her bluntly.

When no one in her neighborhood would take her for work, Jennifer began looking in a nearby town. With the little money she had left, she took a taxi and asked her neighbors to babysit her children in the afternoon.

When she got there, she saw an opening for a housekeeping job at a local hotel. She walked in, applied, and was immediately hired.

“We need a lot of staff around here, especially with the summer season. We’ll be full in a couple of weeks,” the hiring manager told her.

Desperate for a job, Jennifer accepted, even though it would mean traveling to a different city every day. She thanked the hiring manager and returned home, where she told her children she had finally gotten a job.

After spending almost $30 on taxi fare, the mother realized she couldn’t afford to commute to work every day.

It would be better for her to take her own car, but she didn’t have the money to buy one. She realized her best hope was to get a used car.

She found one but wondered if the owner would agree to sell it for a lower price. “Could you please give me this car for $5,000? You see, I’m a single mother with four children, and it’s been hard for me to make money.”

“I was hoping to buy a car so I could get a job in a nearby city,” she admitted.

When the owner learned she was raising four young children alone, he agreed to sell the car for $5,000. “If you can buy the car by tomorrow, I can give it to you for $5,000,” he told her.

Jennifer couldn’t be more grateful to the owner for agreeing to sell her the car at a lower price. She took a risk and applied for a loan at the bank so she could get the car the next day.

Unfortunately, due to her poor credit, the loan was immediately rejected. Running out of options, Jennifer pondered what to do next.

She couldn’t move to a new city because her oldest son, Edgar, had just started school near the trailer park where they lived.

Renting in the nearby city was also much more expensive, and she couldn’t take the trailer with her. She really needed a car to get to and from work and pick up her children from school and daycare.

Then she remembered the family heirloom her late mother had left her: a gold chain necklace that had been in her family for generations.

She teared up at the thought of having to sell it to buy a car, but she desperately needed it to support her children long-term.

Jennifer took the gold chain necklace from her box of trinkets and walked to a nearby pawn shop. “I’m sorry, Mom. I really need to do this right now,” she said aloud.

When she arrived at the pawn shop and showed the necklace, they told her it was valued at $5,500. Jennifer was delighted. The amount was enough to buy the car and would leave her with something left over for her daily needs.

The next day, she returned to the used car lot and handed the owner an envelope containing $5,000. “Thank you for agreeing to sell this to me, sir. You have no idea how much this will help my children and me,” she said, handing the envelope to the man.

The owner, who introduced himself as Jefferson, smiled. “Congratulations. This is an excellent purchase,” he said.

While Jennifer was signing the car paperwork, the man discreetly placed something in the trunk. And when she got in, he said,

“By the way, check the trunk when you get home. I left a gift for your children inside,” the man said. Then he said goodbye.

Since Jennifer bought the car, she had been very busy commuting to work and taking her children to school and daycare, so she completely forgot to check the trunk—until she found a note in the glove compartment.

“I hope this gift will be of great help to you and your children,” the note read. So she opened the trunk in search of the gift.

At first, Jennifer was confused when she saw only a white envelope on the side of the trunk. Then she realized it was the same white envelope she had used to pay for the car. She opened it and saw her $5,000 untouched.

The mother couldn’t help but cry at that moment, amazed by the man’s kind gesture. She drove straight to the used car dealership after work, where she thanked Jefferson for his generosity.

“The world throws challenges your way, and it’s up to you to overcome them or succumb to them. I’m proud of you for staying strong for your children, and I thought you could use the money more than I could. Just always remember to do good,” the man told her.

What can we learn from this story?

Compassion goes a long way. Jefferson owned a used car dealership and made a lot of money, while Jennifer was a single mother with four young children. After the man found out, he decided to help her.
If there’s a will, there’s a way. Jennifer was determined to work hard so she could support her children. She did everything she could to make this happen, even after countless rejections and obstacles along the way.
